The last few weeks I have lost my way. I was doing a great job working on my
eworkbook, Bliss Questing, then I learned about Periscope. Cue the dramatic
music. Its a great app to see people
live broadcast. The “scope” can be
watched live or on a rebroadcast but the rebroadcast only last 24 hours. This is unless they save it and post it
somewhere else. I follow many entrepreneur
encouragers. Each scope was about how to
improve your business. The promise of secret
information is too much for me to miss. That’s
when I fell down the rabbit hole.
I was learning so much but I also had my phone going with scopes
for up to 4 hours a day. 4 hours... The problem with Periscope is that more than
half of each scope is chit chat. Which
is nice, people can ask questions live. These
scopes were leading me to blog posts, webinars, podcasts, youtube videos and
newsletters. All of which I have to then
read, listen to or watch. Information
with a time limit cause me extra stress.
“Must watch within 24!” I know
why this tactics is used but it is too much for me. I was an information monster. I filled half a spiral notebook with
notes. I couldnt miss anything or that
lightbulb moment would be missed. You
know that little nugget of information you have waited your whole life to find
and I would have missed it. I have had a
fear of missing something cool my whole life.
I am pretty sure this is why I have always been a bad sleeper. What if something awesome happened and I was
asleep and missed it.
Heartbreaking. My mom told me
about a segment she watched on the news about FOMO, Fear Of Missing Out, and I
had one of those elusive lightbulb moments.
I have FOMO but good news I am not alone. I need a change to save my sanity. I would look for ways to avoid the overwhelm
of information. After all learning
should be a gift and not a curse. So I
started with a list of overwhelmers.
- Periscope
- Books
- Newsletters
- Creative live
- Webinars
- Blog posts
Moving to the woods doesn’t need to be the only option to
avoid information overload. Someday when
I live in the woods you better bet I will have the interwebs… This week I have not watched one periscope or
webinar. I havent even checked my
email. I did this because at one point I
had to stop learning and start doing. I
need to take care of my own business. If
there is a magic pill of information that I need in my life I have to trust it
will find me at the right time.
How to deal with FOMO
- Make a list of areas that overwhelm you. A free printable
- Pick areas that are important to you. Again no need to give up all the helpfulness that is out there. Maybe pick just a few platforms to learn from or people. Where do you learn the most?
- Make a plan of when you will use these places and people to learn.
- List of was to avoid information that isnt needed.
I love learning and it should enrich your life not make it
stressful. How do you deal with
information overwhelm?
